Strengthening Cooperation to Protect Cultural Heritage through Nuclear Techniques

Under the ARASIA regional cooperation framework, and within the project “Combating Illicit Trafficking of Antiquities and Cultural Artefacts through Authenticity Determination Using Nuclear Analytical Techniques,” the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission hosted an expert mission aimed at strengthening scientific cooperation and enhancing national capacities for the protection and preservation of cultural heritage.

The mission featured a comprehensive programme of scientific, practical, and laboratory activities, including specialized lectures, laboratory measurements and analyses, calibration exercises, and analytical comparisons.

The programme also included a visit to the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums, where experts reviewed the capabilities of the chemical laboratory and conducted calibration measurements on selected archaeological artefacts to support the reliability and accuracy of analytical results.

This activity reflects ARASIA’s commitment to advancing the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology across Arab countries, harnessing nuclear analytical techniques to safeguard cultural heritage and identity while strengthening national infrastructure, technical expertise, and human capacities to address challenges facing cultural heritage.
